Connection
Broadband means permanent connection for a fixed fee, though most providers have a limit on download volume or at least a "fair usage" policy. Unlike dial-up, broadband does not tie up your 'phone line. In fact Rural-WEB, using wireless technology, is independent of your 'phone completely.
Broadband speeds vary, but are usually significantly quicker than dial-up. As Rural-WEB has developed, we have bought more feed to improve our connection speeds. At present we are at around the limit of the wireless technology we use, so we are looking at developing alternatives.
Broadband means that whenever an email arrives you can be alerted straight away. This can have obvious benefits in business, but from a purely domestic viewpoint it means that if you are awaiting important information from friends or family you do not need to keep logging on to find out if it is there!
Community
Benefits
Rural-WEB contributed to the former Community Centre's outreach service for those who were unable to access the Internet and has regularly supported the Scouts' Jamboree on the Air. Other ideas considered have been:
- Virtual library for
eBooks and sharing of books
- Hotspotting meeting
places within the community
- Webcams for safety
Where volunteer time is available and the Committee consider that a project should be supported, Rural-WEB is still happy to make a contribution to the community at large.
